Can dietary supplements lower your risk for Alzheimer’s?
It seems likely so, after reading three recent studies published by leading research institutions that echo the growing body of science behind antioxidant supplementation. The first study, conducted by researchers from the NIH’s National Institute on Aging found that a diet rich in or supplemented with blueberries may reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s and enhance neural signaling. The second study, by researchers at Mount Sinai/UCLA and published in the Journal of Neuroscience, found that Grape Seed Extract may similarly help prevent the onset of Alzheimer’s. Finally, the third study highlights the possible benefits of Omega-3’s in relation to both depression and Alzheimer’s. Blueberries may reduce Alzheimer risk (June 27, 2008) --- Eating a diet rich in blueberries may reduce the severity of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's or cognitive disorders relating to ageing, if results from an animal study can be translated into humans. Full article.Grape seed extract may prevent Alzheimer's: study (June 23, 2008) --- A polyphenol-rich extract from grape seed may prevent the buildup of plaques in the brain that may cause Alzheimer's disease, according to a study from Mount Sinai/UCLA. Omega 3 again linked to Alzheimer’s prevention (June 22, 2008) --- Supplements of omega-3 fatty acids may help combat the depression and agitation symptoms associated with Alzheimer's disease, says a new clinical trial. Full article.
